Firefox Browser

Note: The Firefox browser allows automation of the RDP connection and is therefore recommended over Safari.

Follow the steps below, to access your virtual desktop from a Mac using Firefox:

Prerequisites:

  •    Download and install Firefox (if not already installed). Open Firefox Preferences
    •  On the General tab, in the Downloads section - check the box next to "Close it when all downloads are finished"
    •  On the Content tab, ensure that Pop-Ups are not blocked by clearing the box next to "Block pop-up windows".
  •    Download and install the "Microsoft Remote Desktop Client" for Mac. 

 

STEPS:

1.    Open Firefox and enter the Web Address provided by the system Administrator to access the virtual Desktop Portal.

2a.   Login with your user id and password, select your desktop and click “Connect”.  

The following dialogue should be presented the first time you make a connection using Firefox.

2b.    Select “Open with”, click Choose and select the Microsoft Remote Desktop client that you installed previously.  

2c.    Put a check in the box titled “Do this automatically for files like this from now on” and click “OK”.

3.     Click “Connect” at the resulting dialogue box (see below).  

Note: If you are outside of your corporate network, a random port is used to connect each time, for security purposes.  You will have approx. 30 seconds (before the port closes) to complete steps 4 and 5.

4.     Enter your password again, on the following screen and click “OK”.

5.  Click "Connect" on the certificate warning screen - displayed below - to connect to your windows desktop.

 If you get the following error: "Remote desktop connection cannot verify the identity of the computer that you want to connect to. Try reconnecting to the windows-based computer or contatct your administrator."

then do the following:

  a) Delete all files in Finder ->Places->/Documents/RDC Connections
  b) Repeat steps 2 - 4 above, but this time delete the "Domain" field contents (step 4) leaving it blank before clicking "OK".

6.   Use the  Apple_command.gif (Command key) + the no. 2 key, to view your desktop in full-screen mode or to switch back to window mode.

 

Once you are finished your windows desktop session and Log off, you might see the following screen:

 Click “Don't Save” because a new connection file and port are chosen each time you log in and establish a connection to your desktop.

Note: Depending on your settings the RichClient*.rdp files will begin to accumulate. At any time you can perform some housekeeping by going into Finder and removing the redundant connection files from your computer.

Safari Browser

Follow the steps below, to access your virtual desktop using Safari.

Prerequisites:

  • Check Safari -> Preferences -> Security to ensure Pop-Ups are not blocked.

  • Open Safari, then search for, download and install the "Microsoft Remote Desktop Connection Client" for Mac.

 

STEPS:

1a. Open Safari and enter the Web Address provided by the system Administrator, to access the Desktop Portal.

1b. Login using your user id and password.

2a. Click the “Connect” button to the right of the desktop you want to access. This will download a RichClient.rdp connection file which should appear in your "Downloads" list, as follows:

Note: for security purposes, a new file will be downloaded each time you click "Connect" from the Desktop Portal. Always open the latest file.

2b. Open/Run the RichClient.rdp file.

3. Click “Connect” on the resulting dialogue box - see below.

4. Enter your password on the following screen and click “OK”.

5. Click "Connect" on the following Certificate warning screen to access your windows desktop:

Note: Over time you will accumulate a number of RichClient*.rdp files. Feel free to perform some housekeeping by going into Finder and removing the redundant connection files from your computer at any time.
